A man who died after falling from a balcony at a block of flats in Salford has been named as detectives continue to question two people on suspicion of his murder.
Shay Bishop, understood to be from Leicester and aged in his 20s, passed away in hospital on Saturday night (August 29), sparking a murder investigation. He was earlier admitted with serious injuries following an incident at a block of flats off Liverpool Street in the Langworthy area of the city.
Police called after midnight
Greater Manchester Police said emergency services were called to the scene, across the road from the Ashley Brook pub, shortly after midnight on Saturday. How far he fell hasn't been confirmed, but specialist scenes of crime investigators were pictured inside the flats on Saturday morning working on a top-floor balcony.
In an update on Sunday (August 30), police said two men have now been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with Shay's death. A man in his 20s arrested on suspicion of attempted murder on Saturday has now been arrested on suspicion of murder, GMP said. A second man has also been arrested on suspicion of murder, added the force.
Tributes from friends
Shay's friends have paid tribute to him on social media. One told the Manchester Evening News: "Shay was a good guy who did a lot for people without realising. He stood for what was right and I will carry that with me. I hope he's at peace."
Another said: "It's heartbreaking. I send my condolences to his family and friends. It's extremely sad. He was a young. It's just very sad." A Facebook post from another pal simply read: "RIP Shay, miss you."
Isolated incident, police say
Police chiefs said it is believed to be an 'isolated incident' with no wider risk to the public. Reports from neighbours living nearby the scene said members of the public rushed to help Shay and performed CPR on him. One person said on Saturday: "It's usually quiet on our block. I was only talking to him yesterday. We just [spoke] to each other and [said] 'hi'. He [was] a lovely lad. You don't expect it to happen near your door."
Police said a post-mortem examination was due to take place on Sunday to establish a cause of death. "A team of detectives are working around the clock to establish the full circumstances of this incident," added the spokesperson on Sunday. "Officers are still appealing for witnesses to assist with ongoing enquiries."
Appeal for witnesses
Chief Inspector Lee Gridley, from GMP's Salford district, said on Sunday: "Firstly, our thoughts remain with the man's family and friends as they grieve the death of their loved one. We now have two men in custody, and they are being questioned by detectives."
"The investigation is progressing at pace, and we have a team of detectives working to establish the full circumstances of this tragic event. We understand that incidents of this nature may cause concern within the community; however, we believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no wider risk to the public."

The matter has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the parties having earlier contact with the police, as is standard with incidents of this nature. No further details on the prior police contact have been revealed.
An IOPC spokesperson said: "After being notified by the Greater Manchester Police of the previous police contact with the parties involved in this incident, we sent investigators to the police post-incident procedures in Manchester in assessment mode to gather further information. We continue to remain in assessment mode and will assess a GMP referral in due course."
