A murder investigation is under way after a 45-year-old man was fatally shot in north London. Police and paramedics were called to reports of gunfire just after midnight on Tuesday in the Stoke Newington area of Hackney. Officers arrived to find a man with gunshot injuries; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses reported hearing four or more gunshots followed by shouting and screaming. One person said they saw a man flee up Stoke Newington High Street after the shooting. A Lime bike was left strewn on the pavement as paramedics attended to the victim.
The Metropolitan Police said the victim's next of kin had been informed and were being supported by specialist officers. A cordon remains in place on part of the high street, with buses diverted. No arrests have been made.
Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads local policing, said: “Our team of detectives and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances.” She described the incident as isolated with no wider risk to the public, but urged witnesses to come forward.
