A 46-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot on a quiet village street in County Durham. Police were called to Balmer Hill in Gainford shortly after 8.10pm on Saturday, August 29, following reports that suspects had driven to a house and opened fire from a car before fleeing the scene.
The victim, who suffered birdshot injuries to his abdomen, was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition. No one else at the address was injured.
Arrests made
A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The teenager was also arrested on suspicion of theft, failing to stop and driving without a licence.
Both remained in custody on Sunday as Durham Constabulary continued its investigation.
Police appeal
A force spokesman said: "A 20-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. The boy has also been arrested on suspicion of theft, failing to stop and driving without a licence."
"They both remain in custody. An investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting incident reference 479 of August 29."
