Authorities in Michigan have identified a man they say fatally shot his wife and six children on Friday in what they described as a family annihilation. The bodies were found in their burning home in Grand Haven Township, on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan.
The Ottawa County sheriff's office said autopsy results showed that Kristopher Karolkiewicz, his wife Amanda, and their six children, aged five to 15, all died of gunshot wounds. Kristopher Karolkiewicz shot himself to death, while the deaths of Amanda and the children were ruled homicides. The fire at the home was evidently set intentionally in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though officials were still investigating its point of origin.
Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the killings as an unspeakable tragedy that may never be completely understood. The deputy captain, Jacob Sparks, said the investigation showed this was a murder-suicide, with the fire started after the murders. He added that the case remains open as authorities try to establish what happened leading up to the incident.
Friday's killings were at least the 13th mass murder reported in the US so far in 2026, according to the Gun Violence Archive, and at least eight of those fit the definition of a family annihilation. The violence in Grand Haven was also one of more than 270 mass shootings reported across the US this year. The high numbers of mass shootings have prompted calls for more substantial federal gun control, but Congress has not implemented such restrictions.
Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, had been a vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association until his employment ended earlier in July. Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, was an elementary school substitute teacher known as Mandy. Her mother and stepfather said she was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students. The couple met in 2008 and married in August 2009. The names of the children had not been released as of Tuesday. Officials had investigated a smoky smell near the home on Friday morning but found nothing; three hours later they returned to find smoke coming from the home and discovered the bodies. The family's dogs and at least one cat also died in the blaze.
