A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after unleashing a torrent of violence and racial abuse at a central London McDonald's, leaving staff and customers terrified.
Noel McDonald, of no fixed address, was sentenced at Westminster Magistrates' Court following the shocking incident that took place on the evening of 21st May. The court heard how McDonald entered the fast-food restaurant and immediately became aggressive.
A Spiral of Violence
According to prosecutor Tanya Agarwal, McDonald's rampage began when he started shouting racial slurs at customers. His behaviour quickly escalated from verbal abuse to physical violence.
The court was told he punched a female customer in the face before turning his aggression towards McDonald's employees. He proceeded to throw food and trays across the restaurant, creating chaos and fear among those present.
Confrontation with Security
When security staff attempted to intervene and restrain him, McDonald's violence intensified. He spat at a security guard and continued his tirade of racial abuse, refusing to leave the premises peacefully.
Police were called to the scene and arrested McDonald at the restaurant. He was subsequently charged with multiple offences relating to the disturbance.
Court Sentencing
District Judge Michael Hamilton sentenced McDonald to 18 weeks in prison for his actions. The judge emphasised the seriousness of the offences, particularly the racial nature of the abuse and the physical assaults on innocent people.
In addition to the prison sentence, McDonald was ordered to pay £100 in compensation to the female customer he assaulted and £85 in prosecution costs.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about violence against retail and hospitality workers, with this incident serving as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by staff dealing with aggressive customers.
