A man has been jailed for life for the rape and murder of his former fiancée at a luxury Surrey hotel during his 60th birthday dinner. James Cartwright, 61, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday to a minimum term of 28 years.
Samantha Mickleburgh, 54, from Axminster in Devon, had agreed to attend the birthday meal at the five-star Pennyhill Park Hotel in Bagshot as a gesture of kindness, believing Cartwright had no one else to celebrate with. The court heard she had booked a room with twin beds and a six-course dinner. After the second course, she became unwell and struggled to stand as Cartwright walked her out. He then raped and strangled her, causing a skull fracture.
Cartwright called an ambulance the following morning, claiming he had found Mickleburgh dead in bed next to him. However, prosecutors said he had staged the room to appear as if they had engaged in consensual sex and placed an engagement ring on her finger to suggest a rekindled romance. He had earlier told police she had fallen out of bed.
During the month-long trial, the jury found Cartwright guilty of murder and rape but not guilty of controlling or coercive behaviour. He had denied all charges. In victim impact statements, her family described him as an "evil, controlling, manipulative predator" and spoke of their "indescribable amount of pain and suffering."
Justice Murray said Mickleburgh's family had described her as "caring, thoughtful, fun, well-organised, generous to a fault and devoted to her family", adding that their grief lay "beyond words to fully describe". Prosecutors argued Cartwright's behaviour towards her had been "cruel, repressive and overbearing", with a history of similar conduct in previous relationships.
