A man in his 80s has been detained after allegedly travelling on the wrong side of the main motorway from Dublin to Belfast. The pensioner accidentally drove southbound on the northbound carriageway of the M1 early on Thursday morning, narrowly missing several cars.
Incident on the M1 near Dundalk
Gardaí believe the man, from the Belfast area, had been driving the wrong way for up to six junctions, a stretch of road used by as many as 20,000 vehicles every day, the Irish Mirror reports.
Gardaí were alerted to a car going the wrong way and managed to stop it close to exit 13 in Louth at Dunleer, between Dundalk and Drogheda.
