James Cartwright, 61, has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape and murder of his former fiancée, Samantha Mickleburgh, 54, at the five-star Pennyhill Park hotel in Bagshot, Surrey. The attack occurred during his 60th birthday dinner in May 2023, after Mickleburgh had agreed to attend as a gesture of kindness. Cartwright will serve a minimum of 28 years.
The court heard that Cartwright, who owed Mickleburgh over £100,000, launched a 'vicious and murderous attack' after the second course of a six-course meal. He raped and strangled her, causing a skull fracture, before staging the scene to appear as if they had consensual sex. He placed an engagement ring on her finger and later told police she had died after falling out of bed.
Mickleburgh, a successful businesswoman from Axminster, Devon, was described by her family as 'caring, thoughtful, fun, well-organised, generous to a fault and devoted to her family'. Her sister, Tracey Carter, in a victim impact statement, called Cartwright an 'evil, controlling, manipulative predator' and expressed regret that the family had welcomed him.
Prosecutor Moses Koroma said the jury saw 'straight through Cartwright's claims' that the death was accidental. Cartwright had pleaded not guilty to all charges but was found guilty of murder and rape by a unanimous jury verdict. He was acquitted of a charge of controlling or coercive behaviour.
Justice Murray, in sentencing, noted that the family's grief was 'beyond words to fully describe'. The case has highlighted the dangers of financial and emotional manipulation in relationships.
