An 11-year-old pupil discovered a man's body during a PE lesson at Smestow Academy in Wolverhampton on Monday. The man, locally named as Neil, was found near goal posts on the school field. Emergency services were called but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl's father described how his daughter phoned her mother, screaming, after finding the body. 'She's only 11 years of age. They went out for PE and it was very foggy this morning,' he said. The girl and her year seven classmates were the first to use the field that week.
The man, aged 45, was last seen at 1am on Wheatsheaf Road and later on school grounds at 7.15am. He wore a camouflage jacket, grey gilet, jeans, beanie hat, and carried a red rucksack. His death is being treated as unexplained.
The school closed on police advice but reopened on Tuesday. Affected students were encouraged to seek support from their head of year. West Midlands Police urged anyone with information to call 101 quoting log 1452 of 19 January.
