A 39-year-old man from Liverpool has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent after a man was found collapsed in his Southport home covered in blood, following a suspected attack by three men.
The victim, also 39, had been at The Avenue Bar on Scarisbrick Avenue in Southport during the early hours of Sunday, August 2. Detectives believe he left the venue alone before being followed by three unknown men.
At around 4.45am, he was discovered collapsed in the hallway of his home in Southport, covered in blood and with serious injuries. He was taken to hospital, where doctors found he had suffered devastating facial injuries, including a severe laceration to his right eye that will permanently affect his sight. He also sustained a suspected fractured eye socket, fractures to his head and skull, and extensive bruising to his body.
Investigation and arrests
Merseyside Police launched an investigation into the attack, with officers carrying out CCTV and witness enquiries. Police arrested a 40-year-old man from Bootle on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
In an update on Wednesday, August 12, the force said it has now arrested a 39-year-old man from Liverpool on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent. The man has been bailed pending further enquiries.
Appeal for information
Following the attack, Detective Inspector Keith Swift said: "The man has suffered life-changing injuries, and it is vital that we establish what has taken place.
"I would ask anyone who was in The Avenue Bar between midnight and 1am on Sunday, August 2, who saw or heard anything, or has any information that could assist our investigation, to get in touch.
"I would also ask anyone who recognises the man pictured to contact us, as we believe he could assist with our enquiries."
