A man remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition after entering the River Tyne at the Redheugh Bridge on Monday evening. Emergency services were called at around 5pm following concerns for the welfare of a man on the bridge connecting Newcastle and Gateshead.
Police and Emergency Response
A significant police presence was established in the area, with the bridge closed to both vehicles and pedestrians for several hours. In Newcastle city centre, officers diverted traffic along Scotswood Road, while a police cordon was set up at the Askew Road slip road in Gateshead.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 5pm yesterday (Monday), we received a report of concern for the welfare of a person on a bridge in Newcastle. It was reported that a man was on the wrong side of the railings on the Redheugh Bridge. Emergency services attended and despite the efforts of emergency workers, the man entered the water. He was recovered from the water a short time later and taken to hospital, where he remains in a life-threatening condition. His next of kin have been made aware and are being supported."
Ongoing Investigation
The incident prompted a large emergency response, including police, ambulance, and potentially other services. The North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) has been contacted for a statement regarding their involvement.
The bridge, a key route over the River Tyne, was closed in both directions during the evening, causing disruption to local traffic. The police cordon remained in place as investigations continued.
