Man dies after car hits tree during police chase in Dunstable

A 41-year-old man has died after his car hit a tree following a police pursuit, Bedfordshire Police said.

Pursuit begins in Dunstable

Officers in a marked police vehicle were informed of a grey Audi driving without its lights on in High Street South in Dunstable shortly before 10.30pm on Saturday, according to the force.

The male driver failed to stop for police and a pursuit ensued as the Audi drove off on the A5183 towards Markyate.

Collision near Caddington

At around 10.37pm, the Audi left the road and hit a tree near Caddington, police said. No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Officers conducted first aid and were supported by emergency services, but the driver was pronounced dead shortly before 11.30pm.

IOPC investigation launched

Following the incident, Bedfordshire Police made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which has since launched an investigation.
