A 33-year-old man is in a critical but stable condition following a suspected hit-and-run on a street in Consett, County Durham. Police have arrested a 29-year-old man in connection with the incident.
Officers closed Sherburn Terrace between Salisbury Street and Gladstone Street after reports that a pedestrian was hit by a van at around 9.45pm yesterday. Emergency services attended the scene, and the victim was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) with serious head injuries.
Arrest and police statement
Durham Constabulary confirmed that a 29-year-old man, believed to be the van driver, was identified, arrested, and taken into police custody, where he remains. The force described the victim's condition as "critical but stable".
A spokesperson for Durham Constabulary said: "A man has been arrested following a suspected hit-and-run in Consett last night. Sherburn Terrace was closed after a pedestrian was hit by a van at around 9.45pm."

The road remains closed while officers conduct their enquiries. The investigation is ongoing, and police are appealing for anyone with information, CCTV, or dashcam footage to come forward.
