A man is fighting for his life in hospital after falling from a top-floor balcony at a block of flats in Salford, with another man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.
The suspect, aged in his 20s, was in custody for questioning on Saturday (August 29) as the victim, also believed to be in his 20s, remained in a 'critical condition' in hospital on Saturday afternoon. Police said he was taken to hospital from the scene with 'life-threatening injuries'.
Incident in Langworthy
Emergency services were called to the scene, a block of flats on Southern Street, off Liverpool Street in Langworthy, shortly after midnight on Saturday. The location is across the road from the Ashley Brook pub.
Specialist scenes of crime investigators were pictured working on a top-floor balcony on Saturday morning. A blue forensics tent was put up on the pavement as investigations began.
Public response and appeal
Residents living nearby said members of the public rushed to help the man who fell and performed CPR on him. It has also been claimed that the aftermath was filmed and streamed on TikTok. One nearby resident said they were woken up to sirens at 2am.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed officers were called to 'reports that a man had fallen from a balcony'. A spokesperson said: "Emergency services attended and a man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He remains in a critical condition."
Police investigation
Chief Inspector Lee Gridley, from GMP's Salford district, said an investigation was underway. "A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, and he is currently being questioned in custody," he said. "Our officers are working at pace to establish the full circumstances, and a scene will remain in place whilst the investigation continues."
The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to both men having 'earlier contact with police' before the incident, as is standard procedure. Neither man has been named. Police believe it to be an 'isolated incident' with no wider risk to the public.
