A 61-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of possessing a knife or bladed article after being seen covered in blood on a Norris Green road. Merseyside Police were called to Scargreen Avenue at around 8.20pm on September 29, and officers arrested the man a few minutes away on Cottesbrook Road.
Man hospitalised after assault
The man was taken to hospital for treatment to a head injury sustained during an assault, where he remains in a serious but stable condition. A Merseyside Police spokesperson said the investigation is in its early stages as detectives try to establish the full circumstances.
A large section of Cottesbrook Road remained cordoned off on the morning of September 30. When the ECHO arrived at the scene just before 10am, residents were only being allowed out on foot.
Witnesses describe scene
One father and son, after leaving the cordon, told the ECHO a man was spotted with serious injuries on Cottesbrook Road shortly before police arrived. The son said: “He didn’t look good. I saw him on the ground, his face was full of blood and his eyes were all puffed up.”
Another resident of Cottesbrook Road was overheard saying he had also seen a man bleeding on the street. A woman staying with her sister on the road said: “My sister heard some sort of commotion at about 9pm last night. I saw the ambulance arrive. Apparently someone was attacked. It’s normally a quiet road. People can’t get to work because the police aren’t letting them take their cars out. They’ve said we can leave on foot. That’s why I’m going to the shops now.”
Police search and residents' shock
Uniformed officers and detectives were spotted in discussions with each other and residents in the cordon. A team of six officers arrived just before 11am and started searching the road surface, underneath cars and in bins.
A small number of houses on Cottesbrook Road had not been cordoned off, and residents expressed their shock. One woman said: “I was putting my kids to bed when I saw all the lights flashing and the police arrive. I’ve been here 15 years and never had any problems.” Another said: “I don’t know what happened. I just saw a police officer standing on the corner of the road this morning. My gate was open this morning, I don’t know if I closed it or not. I’ve lived here three years and had no trouble. I have good neighbours.”
Detectives were also spotted patrolling Scargreen Avenue.
