Man charged with murder of student, 18, in Southampton

A 22-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of an 18-year-old university student during a night out in Southampton.

Details of the Fatal Incident

Henry Nowak, a first-year accountancy and finance student from Essex, was attacked in the early hours of Wednesday morning on Belmont Road in the Portswood area. Hampshire Police officers attended the scene but the teenager, who had suffered a chest wound and two leg wounds, was pronounced dead there.

The incident is reported to have occurred after an altercation while Mr Nowak was celebrating the end of his first university semester with teammates from his new football club.

Charges and Police Investigation

Hampshire Police have since charged Vickrum Digwa, aged 22, of St Denys Road, Southampton, with murder and possession of a bladed article in a public place. A second individual, Kiran Kaur, 52, also of St Denys Road, has been charged with assisting an offender.

Both are scheduled to appear at Southampton Magistrates' Court on Monday. The investigation continues, with a 51-year-old man released on police bail and a 26-year-old man released with no further action regarding the murder offence but bailed in connection with other alleged crimes.

Family and University Tributes to a 'Talented' Son

In a heartrending statement released on Sunday, Henry Nowak's family described their son as a 'kind, intelligent, and talented' young man who was 'loved by all those that knew him'.

"He'd smashed his A-levels and was fully embracing university life," they said, noting his involvement in two football teams and a part-time job. "Our hearts ache when we think of the bright future he had ahead of him... Our world will never be the same without our amazing Henry."

Professor Mark E Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, expressed the institution's shock and deep sadness, extending thoughts to Henry's family and friends.
