A man has been charged with assault and obstructing officers following a reported disturbance at the funeral of one of five young men who died in a head-on collision with a marked police vehicle.
The service for 17-year-old Cole Worthy at Teesside Crematorium was disrupted on Wednesday when police responded to reports of trouble inside. Gye Worthy, 39, now faces charges of common assault, a public order offence and obstructing police.
Court appearance scheduled
Cleveland Police confirmed Gye Worthy is scheduled to appear before Teesside Magistrates' Court on October 2.
Cole Worthy was among five young men travelling in a VW Passat that was driving the wrong way along the A66 before colliding with a police vehicle in the early hours of 22nd August. Pc Matthew Blades, 37, and Pc Tom Clough, 38, lost their lives in the smash, and all five occupants of the VW Passat were pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the crash, it emerged that a property in Acklam, Middlesbrough, connected to the teenager had been rammed, resulting in extensive damage.
Cole Worthy's funeral took place on the same day as that of Pc Blades, which was held in Hartlepool. The charges were announced just hours after the funeral of Pc Clough on Thursday, which brought together police officers and Army veterans at Kirkleatham Walled Gardens in Redcar.
