A man has been charged in connection with the deaths of four men in a car crash in Merseyside. The incident occurred in the early hours of July 24 when a Seat Cupra Formentor veered off East Prescot Road in Huyton and collided with a lamppost.
The victims were identified as Jack Diggle, 23, Benjamin Dooley, 23, Andrew Roberts, 24, and Craig Shackleton-Brady, 26. All four were pronounced dead at the scene.
Charge and court appearance
On Friday evening, Merseyside Police announced that James Diggle, 27, of Alundale Road in West Derby, had been charged with four counts of aiding and abetting causing death by dangerous driving. He appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Saturday, where he did not enter a plea and was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Crown Court on September 7.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "As criminal proceedings are now active, we would ask that the public refrain from commenting on, or speculating about, the circumstances of this case online as this could unintentionally prejudice the judicial process. Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones of the four men who tragically lost their lives, and we ask that their privacy is respected at this extremely difficult time."
Tributes and other incident
Tributes have been paid to the victims. In a separate incident, tributes have also been pouring in for Gerard Trojanowski, 44, who died after being struck by multiple vehicles on the A40 in Carmarthen on July 28. Dyfed-Powys Police made a compulsory referral to the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) following the incident, which closed the road for nearly 24 hours. His family described him as a "loving husband and father" and a "wonderful and generous person with a good heart." Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 101.
