A search is under way for a woman who was swept out to sea at Hendon Beach near Sunderland. The coastguard, police and RNLI are coordinating the operation.
Northumbria Police said officers were called to the scene shortly before 19:10 BST on Thursday following reports of concern for the woman's welfare.
The RNLI confirmed that lifeboats had been launched from Sunderland, Tynemouth and Hartlepool to assist in the search.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the woman's identity or condition.
