A Florida man has been arrested for driving under the influence after he crashed his pickup truck into a ditch, left the scene, and returned on a tractor to tow it out. The incident occurred in Callahan, Nassau County, on June 24.
Crash and Return
Police were called to a crash involving a pickup truck. A witness told deputies that the driver had left the scene and gone to a nearby residence. Bodycam footage shows the white pickup truck angled in a grassy ditch along the road. In the footage, someone says, "He's like, I'm going to hook a tractor to it and pull it out, and then I'm going to take the tractor home and come back and get the truck."
The Nassau County Sheriff's Office said in a statement: "Sure enough, the driver returned. On his tractor. To tow his truck out of the ditch." Body camera footage captured the man stumbling over the tractor after he arrived.
Sobriety Test and Arrest
Officers conducted a sobriety test, which the man failed. He was promptly arrested and charged with driving under the influence. Deputies also found a 15-pack of cold beer and multiple already open containers in his pickup truck.
DUI Laws Apply to All Motor Vehicles
The Sheriff's Office reminded the public in a statement: "We probably shouldn’t have to say this, but DUI laws apply to ALL motor vehicles…yes, including tractors. If you’ve been drinking, hand over the keys. All of them." The man's identity has not been released.
