A man has been arrested after a van crossed from the southbound carriageway of the M6 into the path of a car travelling northbound, sending three people to hospital.
Cheshire Police received reports at around 3.30pm on Tuesday, October 27, that a Mercedes Sprinter van had crossed from lane one of the southbound carriageway, near junction 20 at the Lymm Interchange, into the path of an MG HS travelling on the northbound side.
Injuries and arrest
The drivers of both vehicles and a passenger in the MG were taken to hospital. Two suffered minor injuries, while a third sustained potentially serious injuries, police said.
The van driver was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.
Appeal for witnesses
Police are now appealing for anyone with information to come forward. PC Scott Simons said: “I’d urge anyone who witnessed the driving of the van in the run up to the collision to contact me. The same goes for anyone with dash cam footage.”
Traffic disruption
The crash caused significant disruption, with lengthy queues building around junction 20 as both carriageways were closed for several hours. The southbound carriageway reopened shortly before 11am, followed by the northbound carriageway at 1pm. However, drivers continued to face delays of up to 50 minutes in the area, according to traffic alert site Inrix.
Anyone with information should contact Cheshire Police on 101 or via the website quoting IML 2446193.
