Northumbria Police are investigating after a woman's body was found on Seaburn Beach in Whitburn early on Friday morning. Officers received a report of the discovery just after 5am and attended the scene, where the body of a woman was located.
A police cordon was put in place on the promenade but has since been removed, and the beach has fully reopened. The woman's death is currently being treated as unexplained, police said.
Enquiries are underway to formally identify the woman and notify her next of kin. A Northumbria Police spokesperson stated: 'Just after 5am today, we received a report that the body had been found on Seaburn Beach in Whitburn. Emergency services attended the scene where the body of a woman was sadly located.'
Police have now left the area. The investigation continues.
