Man arrested after biker dies in Isle of Lewis crash

A 56-year-old motorcyclist has died following a two-vehicle crash on the Isle of Lewis, and a 44-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Emergency services were called to the A857 at Barvas Moor at around 4.40pm on Saturday, August 22, following a collision between a silver MG and a black BMW S1000 RS motorcycle.

Road closed for investigation

The road was closed near New Park, in Newmarket, for more than 12 hours while investigation work was carried out. Motorists faced a 33-mile diversion between Barvas and Stornoway for much of the day, before the road reopened at around 5am on Sunday, August 23.

The rider of the motorcycle was taken to Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway, where he later died. The driver of the car was arrested in connection with the crash. No other injuries were reported.

Appeal for witnesses and dash cam footage

Police are appealing for information, particularly dash cam footage from other motorists in the area at the time of the crash.

Sergeant Scott MacDonald said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the man who died as a result of this crash. Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and I am appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident or the vehicles prior to contact us. I would also ask anyone who was in the area and may have dash cam footage that could assist to get in touch.”

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Officers are appealing for information following a fatal crash on the Isle of Lewis. Around 4.40pm on Saturday, August 22, we received a report of a crash involving a silver MG and a black BMW S1000 RS motorcycle on the A857 Ness to Stornoway road near to New Park, Newmarket.

“Emergency services attended and the 56-year-old male rider was taken to Western Isles Hospital where he died. His family are aware. There were no other injuries reported. The 44-year-old male driver has been arrested in connection and enquiries are ongoing.

“The road was closed to allow enquiries to be carried out and re-opened around 5am on Sunday, August 23. Anyone with any information is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 2276 of August 22.”
