A 32-year-old man has died after an alleged attack at Liverpool Street underground station while he was on his way home from Notting Hill Carnival. Police and paramedics were called at 10.51pm on Sunday to reports of a serious assault at the station's eastbound Central Line platform, British Transport Police (BTP) said.
Victim dies in hospital
The victim was rushed to hospital in a critical condition and died on Tuesday with his family by his side. They are being supported by specialist officers. Jeremiah Maximo, 38, of Drydock Square, Barking, was arrested and remanded in custody on Sunday following investigations carried out by BTP.
The force said that, prior to the victim's death, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) had authorised a charge of grievous bodily harm (GBH) against Maximo. Following the victim's death, BTP detectives will apply to amend the charge, with the application to be heard at a later date.
Court appearance and appeal
Maximo has been held in custody and is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court today (Wednesday). Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn said: "First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues."
Blackburn added: "The victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident, and we continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation."
