A 24-year-old man has died after getting into difficulty in the water at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex on Sunday evening (August 9).

Sussex Police confirmed the man was visiting the beach with two others, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, when they were caught up in the incident. Emergency crews were called to the seaside spot at around 7pm and rescued the 24-year-old, but he was sadly pronounced dead shortly after. The two others managed to escape the water safely.
Emergency response
A Sussex Police spokesperson said: “Just before 7pm on Sunday (August 9), emergency services were called to Camber Sands Beach in Rye, after it was reported that three people had got into difficulty after entering the water. A large search operation was conducted and two of the three, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, safely exited the water. A third man, aged 24, was pulled from the water at around 7.30pm. Sadly, despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with them. Enquiries in the area remain ongoing, and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time.”
Coastguard statement
A coastguard spokesman added: “At 6.37pm last night, HM Coastguard was called to an incident at Camber Sands, East Sussex. An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.”
The deceased's family have been informed, and police have increased their presence in the area while inquiries are carried out.
