Human remains found by the side of the M67 were those of a man aged 20 to 28, police have confirmed. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said the man is believed to have been 5ft 5 to 5ft 9 and of medium build. His ethnicity is not yet known.
Discovery and investigation
The remains were discovered by road workers on Monday 3 August 2026, near a bridge eastbound between junctions 3 at Hyde and 4 at Hattersley in Tameside. The motorway stretch was closed throughout Tuesday 4 August as forensic officers examined the scene.
GMP is working with specialist teams to establish how the man died and how his body came to be by the bridge. Detectives are attempting to identify him and locate his next of kin.
Police statement
A statement from GMP said: "Detectives are continuing to investigate after human remains were found close to the M67 in Tameside earlier this week."
"Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday 3 August 2026 by road workers who made the discovery close to a bridge between junctions 3 and 4 while they were carrying out routine maintenance work."
"A Home Office post-mortem has taken place to provide more details, and further enquiries are ongoing."
"It is now known that the body is that of a male aged between 20-28-years-old, approximately 5'5" to 5'9" tall and of medium build. The ethnicity isn't known at this stage."
"We are continuing to work with specialist teams to understand the full circumstances behind how the man's body ended up by the bridge, how he died, and to locate next-of-kin to establish an identity."
