Multiple drivers have been told to expect fines after ignoring lane closure signs on the M60 following a crash earlier this month. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) issued the warning after officers noted the registrations of vehicles that drove through the closed lanes.
Crash leads to lane closures near Sale Water Park
Two lanes had to be shut off after a crash on the M60 near Sale Water Park, with emergency service workers and highways workers having to deal with fuel and oil in the carriageway, GMP said.
In a post on their Trafford Facebook page, the force said: "Despite the Red X closures being in place, numerous motorists drove through the closed lanes, putting those working at the scene at risk."
Drivers reported for offences
Officers said they noted the registrations of the vehicles involved, that the drivers were reported and "can expect correspondence regarding the offences."
Two further drivers were reported for using the hard shoulder to "bypass traffic."
"A Red X is not a suggestion, it means the lane is closed," the force said, adding: "Please respect motorway lane closures and help keep emergency workers and road users safe."
Penalties for ignoring lane closures
Most cases of ignoring a lane closure sign result in a fixed penalty notice of £100 and three penalty points on a driving licence, but more severe cases can lead to magistrates' court prosecutions.
