The M56 motorway remains closed in Cheshire after a serious crash, with the eastbound carriageway shut between junction 14 and junction 12 since the early hours of Monday morning.
The motorway has been shut since just after 1.30am due to a police incident, and remains closed several hours later. Travel services say the incident is affecting the eastbound carriageway between junction 14 for Chester Services and junction 12 for Runcorn, with the entire stretch closed off.
Police-led collision investigations
In its latest update just before 6am, National Highways said on X: "Update 3: M56 eastbound in Cheshire between J14 (Ellesmere Port) & J12 (Runcorn). - Remains closed for @cheshirepolice led incident collision investigations. - Currently no significant delays on approach."
Travel service Inrix said: "M56 Eastbound closed due to police incident from J14 A5117 (Chester Services / Helsby) to J12 A557 (Runcorn). Diversion - follow the solid diamond symbols via the A5117, A56 through Helsby and Frodsham, and the A557 to re-join the M56 at J12. Vehicles over 4.4m follow the X diversion symbols."
