M55 Tragedy: Woman's Body Found on Hard Shoulder

A woman's body was tragically discovered on the hard shoulder of the M55 motorway after a passing driver raised the alarm.

Lancashire Police received the first call at around 10.20pm on Monday evening (August 10) concerning a woman's welfare on the motorway. Approximately ten minutes later, a driver heading towards Blackpool contacted police again, reporting what they believed to be a body on the hard shoulder.

Emergency Response and Discovery

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene between junctions one and two, near the Broughton interchange, where they made the heartbreaking discovery of a woman's body. The motorway was shut off for around five hours as investigations were carried out.

Lancashire Police confirmed that officers are now conducting enquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death.

Police Statement

In a statement, the force said: "We were called at 10.20pm yesterday (Aug 10th) to a report of a concern for welfare of a woman. Ten minutes later at 10.30pm we received another call after a motorist driving towards Blackpool on the M55 reported seeing what they believed was a body on the hard shoulder of the motorway."

"Officers attended the scene, between junctions 1 and 2 near to the Broughton interchange, where very sadly we can confirm they found the body of a woman. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances. The motorway was closed for around five hours."
