A woman's body was found on the hard shoulder of the M55 in Lancashire after a motorist reported seeing it, prompting a five-hour closure of the motorway for police enquiries.

Reports and Discovery

Concerns for the welfare of a woman on the M55 were first raised at around 10.20pm on August 10. Ten minutes later, at 10.30pm, another call came from a driver travelling towards Blackpool who reported seeing what they believed to be a body on the hard shoulder.

Officers attended the scene between junctions one and two, near the Broughton interchange, where they found the body of a woman.

Police Statement and Ongoing Enquiries

In a statement, Lancashire Police said: "We were called at 10.20pm yesterday (Aug 10th) to a report of a concern for welfare of a woman.

"Ten minutes later at 10.30pm we received another call after a motorist driving towards Blackpool on the M55 reported seeing what they believed was a body on the hard shoulder of the motorway.

"Officers attended the scene, between junctions 1 and 2 near to the Broughton interchange, where very sadly we can confirm they found the body of a woman. Enquiries are ongoing into the circumstances."

Motorway Closure

The motorway was closed for around five hours while enquiries were carried out. Officers continue to work to establish the circumstances around the woman's death.
