The M25 has reopened in both directions after being closed due to a nearby fire that posed a risk of "secondary explosions" to motorists. The closure affected the stretch between J22 (St Albans) and J21A, following a blaze at a commercial property.
Closure and diversions
National Highways established diversions for road users and urged drivers to "allow extra time for their journeys and consider alternative routes". Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service managed the incident, closing the motorway as a precaution due to the risk of "secondary explosions, smoke and debris affecting the carriageway".
Substantial tailbacks built on the M25 and surrounding roads, including the A405 North Orbital Road and the M1 Southbound. Delays of approximately 60 minutes were reported in both directions on approach to the closures.
Reopening confirmed
A National Highways spokesperson said: "Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service have now confirmed that the M25 can safely reopen in both directions." Traffic officers began the process of removing closures and reopening the carriageway, though delays were expected to remain while traffic cleared.
Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service had 15 fire appliances at the scene tackling the blaze. The incident was also close to the railway line, with Network Rail having a representative on site liaising with the fire service.
Fire response
Ten fire engines were sent to the scene after the service was notified at 9.21am. Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mark Barber stated earlier: "We are currently responding to a fire at a large industrial unit in Ventura Park, Old Parkbury Lane, Colney Street, St Albans."
He added: "Fire Control has received a significant number of calls regarding this incident, and I would like to reassure residents that firefighters are working hard to bring the situation under control. As a precaution, we are asking people living nearby to keep their doors and windows closed and to avoid the area while emergency services continue to deal with the incident."
Barber thanked the public for their patience and cooperation, urging them to follow advice and avoid the area to allow emergency crews to work safely.
