A double-decker London bus reportedly hit a pedestrian before veering off the road and crashing into a building in Hayes on Friday evening (August 28). The H98 bus, running towards Hounslow, appeared to lose control as it turned at a mini-roundabout, leaving the road and striking the wall of a commercial-residential apartment building outside Hayes & Harlington railway station on Station Road.
Emergency response and road closures
Emergency services rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. Station Road was reportedly shut as police and fire crews attended, leading to heavy traffic and widespread bus diversions through Hayes town centre.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.02pm on Friday, 28 August, to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus crashing into a building on Station Road, Hayes, UB3. We dispatched multiple ambulance crews to the scene. We treated a male at the scene, who was later discharged.”
Viral footage and building assessment
A viral video posted on TikTok and Instagram appears to show the moment the bus clipped a pedestrian who was crossing the road seconds before the impact with the building. In the clip, the pedestrian is seen getting back to their feet and walking away.
Engineers later assessed the building and confirmed the damage was non-structural and cosmetic, with no major structural impact. Transport for London said it is working with the operator and police to establish what caused the crash.
A TfL spokesperson said: "Our thoughts are with the person who was injured when a bus collided with a building in Hayes and Harlington earlier today. Safety is our top priority and we and the bus operator, First Bus are assisting the police to establish what happened."
