A locksmith in Cheshire has highlighted a common security mistake that burglars can spot from a distance and exploit with ease. Jonny, who works for Kingdom Keys, warned homeowners about the risk after noticing a front door lock protruding by 10 millimetres during a job.
The customer had asked to switch their lock from a dual key to a thumb turn, which makes it easier to open the door from inside without hunting for keys. But Jonny spotted that the lock was sticking out too far, making it vulnerable to being snapped.
Why 10mm makes a lock easy to snap
In a social media video, Jonny explained: "Here's what I noticed, the front door lock was sticking out about 10 millimeters, that's way too far. And it makes it really easy to snap." He added that "anyone can buy a lock snapping tool online or even use a pair of grips."
The locksmith described the lock positioned that far out as "really vulnerable and a major security risk." He advised that the cylinder should sit flush with the handle to prevent this type of break-in.
Anti-snap locks offer a simple upgrade
Jonny went on to demonstrate the difference between a standard lock and an anti-snap lock. He pointed to a line across the middle of the new silver lock, calling it a "sacrificial point" that breaks off if someone tries to snap it, keeping the door secure.
He described the new lock as "anti snap, anti pick, anti pull and ani drill," calling it "a simple upgrade that makes a big notice to your home security."
