A 15-year-old boy described as 'cheeky' and 'outgoing' has tragically died after getting into difficulty in a lake in Lincoln, prompting a heartfelt warning from his family about the dangers of open water.
Incident at Swanholme Lakes
Declan Sawyer was recovered from Swanholme Lakes on Sunday afternoon following a major search operation. Lincolnshire Police received reports at around 2:30pm of a boy in trouble in the water. Specialist divers and an underwater search team were deployed, and after a thorough search, Declan's body was located. The force confirmed the tragic news on Sunday night.
Father's Heartbreaking Tribute
Declan's father, Carl, released a statement for the first time, describing his son as 'funny and outgoing' with a 'cheeky smile'. He said: 'Our darling boy Declan was a funny and outgoing young man who loved his fishing and his football. He had a very cheeky smile and the personality to match. He was very much loved by his friends and family, and will be missed dearly by many.'
Carl also issued a stark warning to other parents: 'With his tragic and unexpected passing on Sunday 24th May at Swanholme Lakes, we would like to raise awareness about children playing near any rivers or lakes in the hot weather. Please can all parents, friends and family make their children aware of the dangers surrounding water.' The family has requested privacy to grieve.
Social Media Tributes
Prior to his father's statement, friends and family took to social media to pay their respects. One post read: 'Words cannot describe how utterly heartbroken we are... how life can change so fast, and in such a tragic way...' Another family member wrote: 'My heart is so heavy and I don’t have many words. May you rest in peace, my angel. I love you and I promise to carry you in my heart forever.' A friend added: 'He was the funniest boy and he will be missed by so many. My heart is absolutely broken for you all and all his friends. He is a popular young man and will always be remembered. Love you all so much.'
Police Statement and Safety Advice
Lincolnshire Police expressed their condolences and urged the community to support those affected. 'Our thoughts are with his family and we send our condolences at this incredibly difficult time. This is such a sad incident that will no doubt also affect many of Declan's friends and the local community as well,' the force said. They also advised against speculation and sharing unverified information, and directed people to mental health support services. 'As we are starting half-term week, we ask our community to make sure that anyone affected is looked after and that people are encouraged to seek help and support where they need it.'
The tragedy has highlighted the risks of swimming in unsupervised open water, especially during warm weather. Declan's family hopes that by speaking out, they can prevent similar incidents in the future.
