Leeds Murder Probe: Neighbour Tried CPR on Stabbed Teen

Leeds Murder Investigation Launched After Teenager's Death

A 16-year-old girl has tragically died after being discovered with severe stab wounds in a quiet residential street in the Crossgates area of Leeds. The victim, named locally as Chloe Watson, was found unconscious and bleeding from injuries to her back and neck in the early hours of Saturday morning.

West Yorkshire Police have initiated a murder inquiry following the incident, which has shocked the local community. Four adults and one child have been arrested in connection with the death, and they remain in custody as detectives continue their investigations.

Heroic Neighbour's Desperate Attempt to Save Life

In a harrowing account, a 64-year-old grandfather, Wayne Mallows, described how he and a neighbour desperately tried to save the teenager's life. Mr Mallows was awakened by a dog walker at approximately 5:50 am on Saturday, who alerted him that his neighbour was performing CPR on a young girl outside.

"I went out and could see my neighbour was getting tired," Mr Mallows recalled. "I asked if they’d rung an ambulance and then I realised that a phone was on the ground and he had it on loud speaker. Ambulance control were giving him instructions."

Despite having only received mandatory CPR training on a mannequin through his NHS audiology work, Mr Mallows took over the resuscitation efforts until paramedics arrived about ten minutes later. He described the scene as traumatic, noting the girl had been stabbed in the back with significant blood loss and a wound to her neck, her eyes blank.

Community in Shock Over Tragic Loss

Chloe Watson, who lived with her mother and family in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire—approximately 16 miles from the crime scene—was identified after police made a public appeal. Her friends and family have since paid heartfelt tributes on social media, expressing their devastation.

One tribute read: "Your bubbly personality, your weird laugh, your cringy jokes will forever be unmatched. You always made sure everyone was feeling litty and loved…it’s truly devastating."

The incident occurred on Kennerleigh Avenue, a street described by residents as typically quiet, populated mostly by elderly retirees in bungalows with neat gardens. The area is now behind a police cordon as forensic teams gather evidence.

Police Appeal for Information

Senior investigating officer, Detective Chief Superintendent Marc Bowes, stated: "Following our appeal for further information yesterday, we have now identified the deceased as a 16-year-old girl from the Cleckheaton area. Her family have been informed and we are supporting them as they try to come to terms with what has happened."

He urged anyone who was in the Kennerleigh Avenue area in the early hours of Saturday morning to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation. The police were called at 5:55 am on Saturday to reports of a female with serious injuries.

Those arrested include two women aged 18, a man aged 20, and a 17-year-old boy, all detained on suspicion of murder from a nearby address. The investigation is ongoing, with officers working to piece together the events leading to Chloe's death.

Mr Mallows, while bearing up, admitted he is struggling to erase the image of the girl's face from his mind. "In my mind I have a picture of her face," he said. "To me she looked very young, younger than 16. She was wearing a skimpy blouse with a little beige coat over it, and a dress and she had thick socks on."

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact police via 101, use the live chat on the West Yorkshire Police website quoting log 280 of March 28, or provide anonymous tips to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or online.
