A 40-year-old man, Joel Cauchi, has been identified by Australian police as the perpetrator of a stabbing spree at a Sydney shopping centre that left six people dead before he was shot by police. The attack occurred on Saturday at the Westfield Bondi Junction complex, where Cauchi used a long blade to stab shoppers, causing panic.
Five women and a man were killed, and several others, including a nine-month-old baby, were injured. New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated that while it is an obvious line of inquiry whether Cauchi targeted women, the attack is not considered an act of terror, as there is no evidence of ideological motivation. Authorities believe the incident is likely related to Cauchi's mental health.
Cauchi was known to police in his home state of Queensland but had never been arrested or charged. He had lived itinerantly for several years and was first diagnosed with a mental illness at age 17. His family expressed devastation and described his actions as horrific, stating they have no issues with the officer who shot him.
Among the victims is Ashlee Good, the mother of the injured baby, who passed her infant to bystanders after being stabbed. The baby remains in critical condition in intensive care. Other victims include Faraz Tahir, a 30-year-old Pakistani refugee and security guard, and Dawn Singleton, 25, an employee of White Fox Boutique.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese praised the actions of Inspector Amy Scott, the lone policewoman who confronted and shot Cauchi, as well as other bystanders who showed bravery. The investigation continues, with police searching a storage unit owned by Cauchi for clues about his motive.
