ITV's new crime drama 'Karen Pirie' brings a refreshing blend of humour, confidence and charm to the genre. Adapted from Val McDermid's bestseller 'The Distant Echo', the series follows young female detective Karen Pirie as she reopens a 25-year-old murder case. The three two-hour episodes are driven by a podcast that reignites public interest in the unsolved death of barmaid Rosie Duff.
Lauren Lyle, known for her role in 'Outlander', plays the eponymous detective with determination and wit. Unlike many crime drama protagonists, Pirie is not burdened by a dark personal secret or a single defining flaw. The script balances her professional competence with a relatable imperfection, making her a refreshing lead. The supporting cast includes Rakhee Thakrar as the irritating podcaster Bel and Chris Jenks as Pirie's young underling Mint.
The plot centres on the discovery of Rosie's body by three students, who are now a surgeon, a lecturer and an artist. They were never charged but remain under suspicion. The investigation uncovers questions about Rosie's secret assignation, her adopted child, and the involvement of her brothers.
