ITV is set to air a deeply disturbing true crime documentary that delves into the horrific murder of Stephanie Hansen by her obsessed flatmate, Sheldon Rodrigues. On December 30, 2022, 39-year-old Stephanie Hansen was brutally stabbed to death in her home in Hayes, west London. Initially, her housemate Sheldon Rodrigues appeared devastated by the discovery, but police investigations soon uncovered a sinister secret behind his facade. Rodrigues had harboured a chilling obsession with Stephanie for at least seven years, a fixation that ultimately turned deadly when she began a new relationship.
In the months leading up to the murder, Rodrigues planted secret cameras and recording devices throughout their shared home to monitor Stephanie's every move. He also bombarded her with coercive WhatsApp messages, demonstrating a pattern of controlling behaviour. His jealousy escalated when he learned, via a listening device hidden in a television, that Stephanie had a partner. This discovery triggered the fatal attack.
The Gruesome Details of the Crime
Rodrigues launched his assault after returning home from a night shift at a cargo firm near Heathrow airport at 7am. He attacked Stephanie in her bedroom, inflicting nearly 60 distinct injuries on her body. These included knife wounds to her neck and trauma caused by a hairdryer and a large fan. The scene was described as horrific by emergency responders, with a distressing 999 call capturing a voice stating, "I've just found my housemate dead."
During his trial, jurors learned that Rodrigues had devoted 158 hours to listening to audio captured from his hidden surveillance equipment, using it to track Stephanie's movements and spy on her dates. He even proposed undergoing surgery to alter his appearance in a bid to win her affection, highlighting the depth of his obsession.
Justice Served and Emotional Aftermath
Rodrigues denied murder, claiming he installed the recording equipment for Stephanie's safety, but in January 2024, he was convicted of her murder. In March of that year, he received a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years.
