Police in the Indian state of Bihar used tear gas and water cannons to disperse thousands of youth protesters demanding an overhaul of the country's competitive exam system, officials said.
Protesters demand exam reform
The protesters, many of them students, gathered in Patna, the state capital, to demand changes to the way government jobs are allocated through competitive exams. They say the current system is unfair and favors those who can afford expensive coaching.
Police said they were forced to use force after the crowd turned violent, throwing stones and damaging public property. At least a dozen people were injured, including several police officers.
Official response
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the situation was under control and that additional forces had been deployed to prevent further escalation. He said the protesters had not obtained permission for the rally.
The protesters have vowed to continue their agitation until their demands are met. Similar protests have been reported in other parts of the country in recent weeks.
