The Independent Football Regulator (IFR) has said that Manchester City's guilty verdicts in the 115 case "raise serious issues" that could lead to further action in order to protect the game. IFR chair David Kogan set out that the organisation could assess if owners and executives are still 'suitable', should Tuesday's verdict be upheld.
Guilty verdicts and findings
Assessing charges brought by the Premier League against City in 2023, an independent three-man panel has found the club guilty of more than 100 breaches in what is the most significant decision in the history of the competition. The Blues have been found to have disguised over £900m of investment from their owner as sponsorship in order to hide losses and inflate revenues in nearly a decade of systemic cheating.
IFR statement and next steps
The process remains ongoing, and while a furious City maintain their innocence and say they will be appealing any guilty verdicts the appeal and any sanctions hearings will be confidential. However, the IFR have flagged that 'clear evidence of wrongdoing by individuals' would be something they will look to take action over.
“The independent commission’s decision raises serious issues. The IFR has powers to assess the suitability of owners, directors and executives and we will use these powers where appropriate, in the interests of protecting the sustainability, honesty and integrity of English football where there is clear evidence of wrongdoing by individuals," the statement read. "This includes taking account of findings made by the Leagues. However, as the proceedings remain ongoing between Manchester City and the Premier League we will await further developments. We hope it can be resolved quickly for the sake of fans. For now, we have no further comment.”
Guardiola backs the club
City were boosted on Wednesday when former manager Pep Guardiola spoke out in support of the club. The Catalan, who defended the organisation for years while he was in charge, took to social media to say: "I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever. I am, always have been, always will be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran [Soriano, CEO], the players, staff, Enzo [Maresca] and you, our unique supporters. Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all."
