Hornchurch Predator Jailed for 21 Years: Jonathan Carl's Reign of Terror with STI-Infected Needles
Hornchurch man jailed for 21 years in needle terror case

In a case that has sent shockwaves through the London commuter belt, a 56-year-old man from Hornchurch has been handed a monumental 21-year prison sentence for a depraved and calculating campaign of abuse against multiple victims.

Jonathan Carl, of Butts Green Road, was described by the prosecution as a "menacing and manipulative predator" who wielded fear as a weapon. His reign of terror, which unfolded over several years, involved a horrifying arsenal of threats and violence designed to exert total control.

A Catalogue of Coercion and Violence

Carl's methods were as cruel as they were inventive. The court at Snaresbrook Crown Court heard how he:

  • Injected victims with insulin, causing dangerous dips in their blood sugar levels and inducing disorientation.
  • Threatened individuals with needles he claimed were infected with HIV, using the fear of a life-changing disease to ensure compliance and silence.
  • Subjected victims to brutal knife-point attacks and death threats, creating an atmosphere of perpetual terror.
  • Forced one victim into a sham marriage, a stark example of the complete control he sought to maintain over every aspect of their lives.

The Investigation and Impact

The dedicated work of detectives from the East Area Command Unit proved pivotal in dismantling Carl's web of fear. Despite the immense trauma suffered by the victims, they found the courage to come forward and provide the evidence needed to secure a conviction.

Detective Constable Jack Stilwell, the investigating officer, emphasised the profound psychological impact on the survivors. "Carl is a dangerous individual who inflicted unimaginable fear and trauma on his victims," he stated. "The sheer terror they experienced is hard to comprehend."

He praised the victims' immense bravery, noting that their testimony was crucial in putting a "menacing predator" behind bars and preventing him from targeting others.

Justice Served at Snaresbrook

Following a trial, the jury saw through Carl's defences and found him guilty on a multitude of charges, including grievous bodily harm (GBH), threats to kill, and controlling and coercive behaviour.

On Thursday, 27 June, the judge passed the significant sentence, ensuring Carl will face the consequences of his actions for years to come. This case stands as a sombre reminder of the hidden horrors of coercive control and the resilience of those who survive it.
