Aircraft technician Georgie Buxton, 23, died following an explosion inside a plane's fuel tank at Heathrow Airport. He was examining a fuel leak on a Boeing 797-900 when it exploded on June 11. He underwent surgeries to his head and neck before dying at St Mary's Hospital after 27 days in intensive care.
Incident Details
Georgie was one of two Virgin Atlantic technicians examining the fuel leak when the explosion occurred. His colleague avoided injury and moved him from the tank onto the platform stairs. A forensic post-mortem found he suffered craniofacial trauma. The Metropolitan Police are working with the Health and Safety Executive on a criminal investigation. An inquest has been opened and suspended pending any criminal charges.
Family's Tribute
His family, in a fundraising appeal set up by Rachel Buxton, described him as a kind, intelligent and caring young man. They praised the London Air Ambulance and the ICU team at St Mary's Hospital for their efforts. The fundraiser, which supports London Air Ambulance and St Mary's Hospital ICU, had raised £26,614 towards its £28,000 target at the time of writing.
