Gwent Police have arrested a 50-year-old man from Newport on suspicion of assault following an altercation in the city centre that was captured on video and shared online.
Arrest Made
The arrest comes after footage emerged of a man appearing to punch and kick another man on Bridge Street near the HSBC bank. A female was also reportedly involved. The incident occurred at around 7:05pm on Sunday, 26 July.
Officers initially said they were trawling CCTV footage to identify those involved. In an update on Thursday, the force confirmed a 50-year-old man had been arrested and remains in custody.
Police Statement
A Gwent Police statement said: "We received reports of an altercation on Bridge Street after a man was reportedly seen pushing and kicking another at around 7:05pm on Sunday 26 July. Officers attended and have since carried out numerous enquiries, including CCTV trawls. We have now arrested a 50-year-old man from Newport on suspicion of assault; he remains in police custody at this time."
Superintendent Esyr Jones, Neighbourhood Policing for Gwent, said: "We're committed to working with our partners, including Newport City Council, to improve safety in the city centre and when we identify offences, even retrospectively, we will be taking appropriate action.
