A 37-year-old man suspected of carrying out a series of deadly shootings in southern Turkey has died, according to Turkey's state-run news agency. The attacks occurred on Monday in Tarsus, Mersin province, leaving six people dead and eight others wounded.
The suspect first killed his wife in the street, then fired from his car at a restaurant, killing the owner and an employee. He later killed a teenager, a 50-year-old man, and another victim in a separate Tarsus neighbourhood. The total death toll included his wife and five others.
Police deployed helicopters and drones in a major search operation before locating the suspect. He took his own life inside a house where he had been hiding as security forces surrounded the building, the Anadolu Agency reported.
The Mersin governor's office stated that the man had a history of substance abuse and psychiatric problems. The motive for the attacks remains unclear.
Turkey has been shaken by a series of recent shootings, raising concerns over gun violence and school safety. Last month, a school shooting in Kahramanmaraş province killed 10 people, while another school attack a day earlier wounded 16.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan offered his condolences for the deaths following a Cabinet meeting but did not provide information on the gunman or his motives.
