The family of a 79-year-old grandmother found dead at her home in Bettws, Newport, have paid tribute to her as a “beautiful” and “independent” woman. Mari O’Flynn’s body was discovered at a house on Leach Road at about 1.55pm on Tuesday.
Gwent Police confirmed that a 51-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. Officers have stated they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
In a statement, Ms O’Flynn’s family described her as a “strong, independent lady” who had much to look forward to, including a trip to Greece, where she had lived for 10 years with her husband. They expressed their devastation at how she was “cruelly taken away”, adding that they take comfort in knowing she has been reunited with her husband.
Police attended the scene alongside paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service, who confirmed Ms O’Flynn had died. A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct in line with normal procedures.
