A quiet Welsh community has been left reeling after a much-loved grandmother was tragically shot dead in her own home in a shocking incident that has prompted a major police investigation.
Mavis Long, 76, described by neighbours as a "wonderful and kind-hearted" woman, was found with fatal gunshot wounds at her property in the village of Nantyglo, near Brynmawr, Blaenau Gwent.
Community in Mourning
The peaceful village, where such violent crimes are virtually unheard of, has been plunged into grief following the discovery of Mrs Long's body. Local residents have expressed their complete shock and devastation at the loss of a woman known for her warm personality and strong community spirit.
One neighbour, who asked not to be named, described the atmosphere as "utterly heartbreaking" and spoke of Mrs Long as "the sort of person who would do anything for anyone."
Major Police Response
Gwent Police have launched a full-scale murder investigation and are treating the death as suspicious. Forensic teams have been conducting extensive examinations at the scene while detectives continue their enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Police confirmed they were called to the address following concerns for the welfare of a resident. Upon arrival, officers discovered the grandmother's body with what appeared to be gunshot wounds.

Investigators are urging anyone with information, particularly those who may have witnessed unusual activity in the Nantyglo area around the time of the incident, to come forward immediately.
A police spokesperson stated: "We are pursuing several lines of enquiry and are determined to bring whoever is responsible for this horrific crime to justice."
