Grandfather Dies After Being Dragged Half a Mile in Brutal Carjacking Incident
A grandfather has tragically lost his life following a horrific carjacking in Toledo, Ohio, where he was dragged for half a mile behind his own vehicle. The assailant, who fled the scene, later died after being struck by traffic while attempting to escape.
Details of the Fatal Attack
Donald Russell, aged 67, succumbed to catastrophic injuries sustained during the brutal robbery perpetrated by Jesse Moats, 38. According to the Toledo Police Department, the incident occurred on February 19 when Moats snatched Russell's vehicle at a bus stop. Russell, who was still wearing his seat belt, was dragged by the car during the theft.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported Russell to the hospital, but he passed away on Tuesday, as confirmed by his daughter. Meanwhile, Moats fled in the stolen vehicle but lost control and crashed on a nearby highway. He then attempted to cross traffic on foot and was fatally struck by a passing semi-truck.
Family's Heartbreaking Account
Russell's granddaughter, Anniyah Fell, shared that he was giving her and her boyfriend a ride to the Toledo Bus Station when the attack happened. Fell recounted waving goodbye to her boyfriend only to return and find the car missing, with her grandfather's personal items scattered on the ground.
Witnesses described seeing Russell beaten and dragged for half a mile while still restrained by his seatbelt, leaving him torn from his clothes and abandoned in the road. Fell told local news outlet WTVG that her grandfather suffered kidney failure and was in a coma after the accident, adding, 'He tells me I’m his world, and it breaks my heart to see him like this.'
Russell's daughter, Kelly, announced on Facebook that he died in the hospital on Tuesday night. The family is now raising funds through a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses and save his house, with proceeds redirected following his death.
Suspect's Background and Aftermath
An obituary for Jesse Moats identified him as a father of three. His mother, Charleen Moats, expressed shock and sorrow, describing her son as a 'loving, kindhearted, giving person' and stating she had no idea what prompted his actions. She apologized to the Russell family for their loss and mentioned receiving angry threats in the wake of the incident.
The investigation into the carjacking and murder remains ongoing. Lieutenant Daniel Gerken has urged anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers. The Daily Mail has reached out to the Russell family for further comment as the community grapples with this tragic event.
