Good Samaritan Praised for Swift Action in Rhode Island Ice Rink Shooting

Authorities have credited a courageous bystander, described as a "good Samaritan," with bringing a deadly shooting at a Rhode Island youth hockey game to a rapid conclusion. The incident, which unfolded at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket, resulted in the deaths of two adults and injuries to three other individuals.

Chaos Erupts During Youth Hockey Match

According to police reports, the shooter unleashed a barrage of gunfire during the youth hockey game, creating panic and chaos among players and spectators. Unverified video footage circulating on social media captures the terrifying moments, with players on the ice hearing popping sounds before diving for cover or frantically skating toward exits, while fans fled their seats in fear.

Pawtucket Police Chief Tina Goncalves stated that the attack was "brought to a swift end" thanks to the intervention of the unnamed good Samaritan, though specific details of how this occurred were not disclosed. The shooter, identified as Robert Dorgan, also known as Roberta Esposito, born in 1969, later died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Chief Goncalves.

Investigation Underway with Nearly 100 Witnesses

As of Monday evening, investigators had spoken to nearly 100 witnesses in an effort to piece together the events that transpired early Monday afternoon. The arena is located just a few miles outside Providence, adding to the shock felt across the local community.

Chief Goncalves indicated that the shooting appears to have been a targeted event, potentially stemming from a family dispute. However, the exact motives, what precipitated the violence, and who was specifically targeted remain unclear at this stage. Authorities have confirmed that both deceased individuals were adults, but have not yet released their identities pending notification of next of kin.

Rhode Island Grieves Another Tragedy

This shooting comes nearly two months after Rhode Island was rocked by another violent incident at Brown University, where two students were killed and nine others wounded, along with a Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor. In that case, the perpetrator, Claudio Neves Valente, 48, was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a New Hampshire storage facility.

Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee expressed profound sorrow in a statement, saying, "Our state is grieving again. As governor, a parent, and a former coach, my heart breaks for the victims, families, students, and everyone impacted by the devastating shooting at Lynch Arena in Pawtucket." The community now faces the arduous task of healing and seeking answers in the wake of this tragic event.
