Glasgow road closed as balaclava-clad protesters swarm area

Parkhead Cross in Glasgow's east end was locked down by police on Wednesday night after a group of people, many wearing balaclavas, swarmed the area. Several roads and junctions were completely blocked off due to the activity.

Protesters March Through Shettleston

A large crowd is believed to have marched through Shettleston before being stopped at the busy junction, which joins Tollcross Road with the Gallowgate and is situated near Celtic Park and The Forge Shopping Centre.

Footage posted on Facebook appeared to show the group chanting "our streets" and yelling "send them home" before they were flanked by a major police presence.

Police Presence and Arrests

Other clips taken at the scene and shared on social media showed multiple blue-lit police riot vans lining the street. One masked and hooded protester was seen being carried into a police van.

More video footage showed uniformed police officers speaking to protesters and asking them to stay off the road while other members of the force stood guard by the pavement in an attempt to keep relations calm between protestors and cops.

Roads Reopen

Glasgow City Council previously confirmed that traffic was not allowed to pass through Parkhead Cross "due to an ongoing police incident" affecting Tollcross Road, Duke Street, Westmuir Street and Springfield Road.

Emergency services were in attendance and motorists were urged to steer clear of the area. It is understood Parkhead Cross has now fully reopened but that a police presence remains in the area. It's not yet clear how many people have been arrested as a result.

A Glasgow City Council spokesperson said: "Parkhead Cross is now open to all traffic however, there remains a police presence in the area and drivers are advised to approach the area with caution."
