Abdul Begum, a 42-year-old delivery driver in Glasgow, was attacked by a gang of more than ten youths in Rutherglen while delivering a McDonald's order. The assailants, some masked, punched him, threw eggs, and shouted racial abuse, including telling him to "go home." They also stole his delivery bag. Police Scotland is treating the incident as a hate crime.
Attack Details
The incident occurred in the Western Avenue area. Begum, who moved to Glasgow from Spain in 2020, said the group initially claimed a JustEat order was theirs, then waited for him at the entrance to a flat. As he rang the buzzer, they surrounded him, pelting him with eggs and punching him. He managed to reach his car, but they opened the passenger door and took his delivery bag.
Begum told GlasgowLive: "One of them swore at me as I went up to the door, called me a m**********r, but I just ignored them and went to the building." He added: "As I was ringing the buzzer they all came up behind me and started pelting me with eggs and shouting at me to 'go home'. Three or four of them were punching me as I tried to get away, and others were pelting me with eggs and shouting at me to leave the country, go home and saying really bad stuff."
Aftermath and Impact
Begum, a father of four, called police from a quiet spot. Officers responded quickly and took his statement. He believes CCTV from the building may help identify the attackers. The attack has left him terrified to work. "I never expected it, and I’ve never faced anything like this," he said. "I’ve heard of it, but I always found the people here in Scotland to be very nice, very friendly. That’s why I moved here, for my kids' future. This was really scary though. It’s shocking, and I’m finding it hard to get back out and do my job."
Police Response
Police Scotland confirmed they received a report around 11.20pm on Tuesday, 11 August, 2026. A spokesperson said: "Officers attended, but the man did not require medical treatment. A search of the area was carried out but no one was traced. Enquiries remain ongoing." The force is treating the incident as a hate crime.
