A nine-year-old girl has died from injuries sustained in a car crash in County Cavan, Ireland, which also claimed the life of her mother.
Irena (Ira) Mereacre, 9, had been in hospital since the collision on Friday, 24 July 2026. Her mother, Nell Raven, 53, was killed at the scene. Gardai confirmed Irena passed away on Tuesday, 28 July.
Crash Details
The collision between a car and a flatbed van occurred on the R162 at Corclare, near Shercock, County Cavan, at approximately 4.30pm on Friday. Ms Raven, an English-born writer and journalist who had recently become an Irish citizen, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her daughter was rushed to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin with serious injuries but died on Tuesday.
Investigation and Appeal
Gardai said in a statement: "Gardaí continue to investigate a fatal road traffic collision on the R162 at Corclare, Shercock, Co. Cavan, on Friday 24th July 2026. The collision involved a car and a flatbed van, and occurred after 4.30pm (approximately)."
"The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 50s, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger in the car, a female juvenile child, was removed from the scene to Temple Street Hospital, where she passed away this afternoon, Tuesday 28th July 2026."
